The Thematic Areas in which this district operates is derived from in-depth studies, aimed at identifying the industrial priorities of the territory and technological skills which can be associated in order to encourage the innovation of products, processes and services.
This has led to an approach based on “transversality and reuse”, in which enabling technologies and macro areas (for example: ICT, decision support systems, security modeling / simulation, etc.) are used for direct development in specific sectors in which the district has relevant skills (eg Automation, Complex Organizations, Solutions for Safety and Security, Territorial Monitoring and Control, Mobility Systems and Logistics) and with collaborative developments in areas such as Energy and Life Sciences. In this case, the SIIT district provides specific technological support to other organizations with expertise in a specific domain.

Parties involved

Selex Communications, Alcatel, Ansaldo STS, Elsag Datamat, Bombardier Transportation Italy, Softeco Sismat, Consorzio PMI (Aitek, Cap, Iris, Fos, Heron, TechnoAware), Università di Genova (DIBE, DISI, DIST), CNR (Dipartimento ICT)

Project Overview

The current scenario is characterized by the presence of numerous research initiatives that are mainly aimed at dealing with specific aspects of transport systems and services offered to mobile users. Therefore, the lack of an integrated approach to the whole mobility and transport scenario is evident.
The project has defined, developed and implemented, from a methodological and technological point of view, a first response to this integrated vision, capable of jointly tackling the different aspects of the problem, with a perspective, however, of high scalability and adaptability to the different realities of the world of transport and mobility.

The project was aimed at the study, development and validation, through direct experimentation in the field, of an integrated cooperative information system – Advanced Cooperative Info-mobility System – ACIS.

TECDOC: Digital Technologies for Complex Organizations

Parties involved

Cetena, Ericsson Telecomunicazioni, Elsag Datamat, Consorzio PMI (C&C Sistemi, Fos, Hub Telematica, I.LOG, NIS), Università di Genova (DIBE, DIST), CNR (Dipartimento ICT)

Project Overview

This project was inspired by some issues that have emerged in the Ligurian territorial context which are also clearly found at national as well as international levels, where many of the productive and economic activities are complex and fragmented. Therefore, they are often inefficient or otherwise can be optimized.
By studying some cases in terms of constituent processes, the project has implemented some valid support in order to plan, coordinate, monitor and manage the many operational and management activities for “Complex Organizations” in the most effective and efficient way.
In particular, specific systems have been studied and developed (here on in called “Application Platforms“), capable of intelligently integrating processes, services and technologies to better support the conduct of the activities of these Organizations.
“Complex Organizations”, with reference to the project, selected both in the industrial and service sectors, are those known as “Business Communities“, for example aggregates of subjects of various types, such as: companies, institutions, public administration, universities and research centers, as they work in the same area, thus sharing objectives and tools for achieving their institutional goals.

SINTESIS: Integrated Security Intelligence System

Parties involved

Elsag Datamat, Selex Communications, Ansaldo STS, Selex Sistemi Integrati, Consorzio PMI (Aitek, NIS, Selesta Ingegneria, TP, TechnoAware), Università di Genova (DIBE, DISI, DIST), CNR (Dipartimento ICT)

Project Overview

SINTESIS has created an innovative structure for information management based on the concept of “Network Centric Operation” that optimizes the concept of distribution, QoS and “time critical” processes that, in addition to ensuring interoperability and interfacing with other existing systems, promotes synergies at an organizational and operational level with the operators in the sector.

The project’s main scope of research has therefore been the study and application of a new paradigm: the “cognitive model” applied to safety.
In summary, elaboration nodes have been developed that transform sensory signals and events into safety-sensitive information (intelligent sensory nodes and cognitive nodes), on which to perform an autonomous cycle of perception-analysis-decision-action, which brings these nodes closer to a behavior similar to that of human operators, with the ability to analyze and synthesize, however, infinitely superior and related to the complexity of situations and needs of “real time”.

Project Overview

The project was carried out in line with the strategic tendency, by some large companies, towards applications of “Extended Automation”, based on the use of teams of advanced robotic systems, autonomously operating and cooperating in difficult environments, strongly characterized by one or more of the following aspects: harmfulness, complexity, non-structuring.
All applications that, given the strong content of robotics and advanced automation, have also received specific interests from many associated territorial SMEs in the Genoa and La Spezia competence centers.

Integrated intelligent systems to meet the demands for functional flexibility applied to power plant components and systems

Parts involved

Ansaldo Energia, Softeco Sismat, Consorzio PMI (RGM, Prometheus), Università di Genova (DIBE, DIST, DIE, DIMSET, DIMSET-Savona Combustion laboratori)

Project Overview

The project, which has already been developed, constitutes the first phase of a long-term multiannual R&D program intended for large power plants on a priority network which, starting from the short-medium term, will be progressively called upon to guarantee the modulation of electricity on an hourly basis.

Due to the extended use, the control units must, in fact, be made flexible enough to vary the power supply several times a day. All this with unchanged conditions of security, reliability and efficiency, which is an ambitious goal in light of the general consideration that these requirements are more easily respected in situations of prevalent nominal operating than in off-design.

IDRO-RIN TRAN-GENESI: Studying new technology for a large-scale generation of hydrogen from renewable sources for land-naval transport and distributed generation

Parts involved

Unige DIMSET, Unige DIST, CNR IENI, Ansaldo Energia, Orizzonte Sistemi Navali

Project overview

The completed project has a significant potential in a global scenario and has pursued:

  • The study of technologies for the generation of electrolyte hydrogen by means of alkaline electrolyzers (currently on the market) or high temperature electrolyzers (under research): this study can be carried out on a large scale using electrical energy generated from renewable primary sources, not converted or not used due to lack of energy demand.
  • The study and evaluation of the performance of a hydrogen production system and its storage, with particular regard to the search for innovative and efficient storage systems (through the use of nanomaterials), constructing a complete laboratory for this purpose.
  • Reactor research for the conversion of hydrogen and CO2 into hydro-methane and other “chemicals” (for example hydro-methane and methanol), which, along with hydrogen, can be applied to a land and sea transport system as well as in the field of distributed electrical generation.
  • A study to evaluate the use of oxygen generated electrolytically, taking into account its economic value and the large amount of oxygen generated in the electrolytic process.
  • The study of innovative storage methodologies (for example nanomaterials) has been developed, which are more efficient than those currently adopted (under pressure, chemical, cryogenic), in order to facilitate the diffusion of hydrogen in ship and land transport.
  • The entire project has been followed every step of the way by a complete steady state and time dependent thermo-economic hierarchical approach, in order to identify the best technical and economical plant engineering solutions, also evaluating an optimal size for the system and its interface redefining the contour from time to time based on the geographical area of application with particular regard to applications in the field of land and sea transport, as well as for distributed electrical generation plants.

PLUG-IN: Urban Mobility Platform with Information Management from heterogeneous sources

Parties involved

Elsag Datamat, Selex Communications, Bombardier Transportation, Ansaldo STS, Unige DISI, Unige DIST, Unige DIMSET, Unige DINAEL, Unige DIBE, CNR IMATI, CNR IEIIT, CNR ISSIA, Softeco Sismat, Aitek, Abirk, Insis, Cap, On-Air, Fos, Cleis Technologies, Gruppo Sigla

Project Overview

The project, already developed, consisted in the design and implementation of a platform in the context of urban mobility for the management of information from heterogeneous sources, aimed at determining the current traffic status, reliably assessing its evolution in the short to medium term, defining possible intervention strategies in the event of congestion and provide real-time, collective or personalized indications to users.
The methodologies used for integrating information sources, traffic status forecasting and real-time management are also innovative from a scientific point of view.
Data for traffic forecasting and control were collected from multiple sources; among which professional users (Fire Brigade, Municipal Police, 118, etc.), vehicles equipped with special on-board instruments, sensors for the analysis of traffic scenes, which compensate for the lack of “traditional” sensors like spire and AVM.
Various sources have also been integrated from a semantic point of view.
The project has dealt with the issue of info-mobility by extending the scope of competence to the two different means of transport, road and rail, treating the mutual effects. An important part of the project was linked to the telecommunications aspect. The problem addressed is the interconnection of heterogeneous networks (IP networks that connect the data base of the operating rooms, wireless networks that connect vehicles, satellite networks that connect mobile systems, etc.), a need that has grown since we want to interconnect to the PLUG-IN platform, professional bodies / services, which have the role of both traffic sensors (providing information to the system) and network users who receive information on traffic congestion (in cases such as entities / services, the 118, the Municipal Police) or do not have their own connection or do not intend to use it to exchange the information in question to their mobiles. It must be the platform itself, as discussed in this project, to provide personalized interconnection to individuals.

GESTEC: Technology oriented towards services for the development and integration of ICT platforms

Parties involved

Elsag Datamat, Ericsson, Cetena, Unige DISI, Unige DIST, Unige DIBE, CNR, Softeco Sismat, IB SRL, NIS, Finsa Consulting, Cap, Hyla Soft Spa, Fos, Gruppo Sigla, Hub Telematica

Project Overview

This project, currently under development, is part of the SIIT District thematic profile called “Complex Organizations”.
The theme is transversal and applicable in various contexts covered by the District, however, the members are specialized in transport, shipbuilding, port and logistics, which derives from their prevalent location in the city of Genoa, and this specificity has led to consider these application domains in a privileged way, conditioning, at least in part, the activities of the project.
The Gestec project summarizes these two aspects. On one hand, it is a project that is transversal to the ICT application areas, aimed at increasing the potential for each participant, each according to its own characteristics, from the methodological and technological point of view in ICT.
On the other hand, it is affected by the District’s logistic specialization and places particular emphasis on the application and demonstration of results in the logistics sector. The transport specialty of the District and the city are then put at the service of the project to provide it with an application field in which to demonstrate the validity of the results obtained.
The project has, as its guideline, taken into consideration that one of the most significant developments in the ICT field regards the affirmation of the concept of “service”, which becomes the central element, at all levels, on which the application software platforms are based (http: //initiative.future-internet.eu), therefore it particularly takes into consideration the Internet of Services paradigm, according to which the devices connected to the network make their functions available in the form of services accessible through standard interfaces.

MAREA: Monitoring And Rescue Automation

Parties involved

Oto Melara, Selex Galileo, Università di Genova (DIST, DIBE, DIMEC), CNR (ISSIA), Canova tech, FOS, Graaltech, Hyla Soft, INSIS, Medservice.com, TechnoAware, Telerobot

Project Overview

The MAREA project, currently under development, directs management on a self-coordinating cooperative basis, of “teams” of autonomous vehicles for terrestrial, above and under water surveillance and monitoring, as per
the following three directions of study and development:

  • Teams, also composed of autonomous air vehicles
  • Teams, also composed of autonomous means of intervention (intelligent land and underwater vehicles, handling and transportation)
  • “Swarms” of autonomous vehicles, characterized by a high number of agents, even if each one has a simpler structure and a reduced decision-making capacity (certainly for the terrestrial domain, but with possible extensions that can be evaluated also for air, above and under water).

For these development lines it is expected to be able to make constant reference to the following application scenarios connected to them

  • Monitoring and Intervention in the context of Infrastructures, Plants and surrounding environments: with a particular interest in large hydroelectric plants;
  • Monitoring and Intervention in the context of Post Disaster Emergency Scenarios: with particular interest in post-earthquake emergency and serious environmental-structural accidents in general.

As outlined and as support to the three courses of development indicated above, other aspects of research will be considered just as important, such as: energizing, support for navigation (sensors and videos), a possible integration into the system and possibly in the same swarm of other subsystems, as well as the use of manipulators.

START-ECO: Advanced Solutions and Technologies for ECO-Sustainable Telecommunications Networks

Parties involved

Ericsson Telecomunicazioni Spa, Softeco Srl, Università di Genova (DITEN e DIBRIS), CNR (ISSIA e IEIIT), Aitek Spa, Gruppo Sigla Srl, Abirk Srl, NIS Srl

Project Overview

The project START-ECO, already developed, where the objective is the study, definition and demonstration of a set of innovative solutions for equipment, devices, management and control systems, which operate in an integrated and widespread manner in the system and in the protocols of the entire network, dynamically determining and implementing configurations capable of optimizing the overall consumption of the network while maintaining capacity, making it suitable to maintain the required services at the necessary quality level.

The START-ECO project has essentially addressed solutions for eco-sustainable telecommunications networks by studying, defining and introducing mechanisms and technologies that optimize energy efficiency in TLC equipment and systems.

It should be pointed out that the aim is a dynamic minimization of consumption according to the offered load, but at the same time respecting the constraints to maintain a certain level of service quality and safety levels.

The optimization mechanisms have been implemented without introducing functional limitations and / or substantial changes in the operational capabilities of both the equipment involved and the network as a whole. The solutions adopted have provided for an introduction to the equipment and interfaces of advanced standby and power dynamic scaling capabilities, conveniently extending the line and network protocols to support these functions.

The realization of consumption optimization has proposed the study of new models able to summarize the energetic behavior of the equipment and interfaces according to the load status, the available power management features and the level of performance and quality of service required. The set of defined solutions can be divided into three distinct areas of intervention that are applied in two different segments of the network (access and transport), verifying both the possible synergies and interactions that can occur between the different solutions analyzed and the different application contexts; both results are obtained by focusing on an integrated network plan.

Project Overview

This project tackles problems and proposes innovative solutions by conducting industrial research and experimental development, organized into 2 possible objectives (OR) focused, respectively: on ultrasound diagnostics (OR1) and on mini-invasive echo-guided procedures (OR2).

The anticipated result obtained from the project consists in the study and realization of experimental demonstrations

  • a compact, high performance ultrasound system (OR1)
  • a set of techniques for advanced identification, the characterization of tissues and the estimation of the temperature reached by tissues during thermal ablation, aimed at diagnosis and echo-guided procedures (OR2).

Specifically, the project is divided into two main strands, variously interconnected and corresponding to the two main research objectives:

OR1 – New generation compact ultrasound system

Study of basic technologies for the development of a compact high performance ultrasound system, reduced in size and weight, which can be assembled on a trolley and usable in the intra and extra operative field, or for minimally invasive therapeutic procedures, thanks to some functions of support and with a three-dimensional graphical real-time rendering (scope of OR2 activities)

OR2 – Support tools for diagnosis and echo-guided procedures

Acquisition of the necessary knowledge and implementation, at a demonstrative level, of certain processing and analysis tools to be used in conjunction with the ultrasound platform referred to in OR1.

Specifically, the goal is to: enhance diagnostics through the development of tools for the characterization of tissues, combining the elastography technique with the analysis of the ultrasound response generated by specific regions of interest of the tissues themselves and, at the same time, providing better reproducibility and objectivity to the elastography technique; to enhance minimally invasive surgical therapy, in particular, thermal ablation therapy, through the development and refinement of a range of instruments, based on new visualization paradigms for the intra-operative target and concerning both three-dimensional navigation and monitoring the effects of the treatment (volumetric-temporal visualization, estimation of the temperature and its variation in time and space, etc.).

SITE: Intelligent Systems for the development of Power Technologies in the short and medium term: fossil, renewable and nuclear

Parties involved

Ansaldo Energia, Elsag Datamat, Università di Genova (DIMSET, DINAEL, DIBE, DIMEC), CNR (IEIIT-Istituto per l’Energetica e le Interfasi), Gruppo Sigla, Softeco Sismat, Pegaso Systems, Aitek, Leonardo Sistemi, DotVocal, FOS, Sitem, Graaltech, telerobot, Tag control

Project Overview

With reference to the area of “Power”, the study of an issue that has been addressed, for different reasons, and is of particular importance, both from a technological point of view as for its impact on the social fabric. Smart energy districts are an extension of “smart grids”, “intelligent” power grids that already represent one of the greatest technological challenges faced by the research world and the industrial world in recent years. It is expected to be at the center of efforts (and investments) for the Utilities sector and the National Governments themselves for many years to come. With the “power district”, in fact, issues related to intelligent electricity networks are extended to the production and distribution of thermal energy as well as cooling, developing an integrated model for the management (production, marketing, distribution, use) of electricity and thermal energy in a “district”. The presence, on one hand is distributed consumption, on the other, non-controllable renewable energy and electricity production within the same district, poses new problems for both technical and economic sustainability, whose development represents the scope in the present research project. The topics covered require broad multidisciplinary knowledge. The development of the project was made possible thanks to the expertise available in the area and the opportunity for close collaboration between the various SIIT District components, in particular among the companies who made the proposal, among which are Large Companies (Ansaldo Energia and Leonardo Finmeccanica), various university departments and numerous SMEs, all present and active in the Ligurian territory and representing a center of excellence at a national level, with regard to both research and commercial applications. The partners of Grande Industria, in particular, have specific high-level experience: Ansaldo Energia is active in the field of power generation plants from fossil fuels and from renewable sources. Leonardo Finmeccanica, has been active for years in the world of ICT solutions in general and for the energy world in particular, having developed SW applications for the control of plants and networks (SCADA) and, for example, for the Power Stock Exchange.
